Alongside my personal experience, I am fully trained in Autism and Special Educational Needs and have worked in an SEN school for a number of years.

Through ASD Bright Ideas, I create and supply high-quality visual resources designed to support children who have been diagnosed with, or are in the process of being assessed for, autism, ADHD, and other special educational needs. My resources are also beneficial for children with learning difficulties, non-verbal children, and those with short-term memory challenges.

Visual supports can help reduce anxiety, improve understanding, encourage independence, and support communication. They are valuable not only for children with additional needs, but for all children across learning, routines, and everyday life skills.

When a child is diagnosed, “Why use visuals?” is a very common and important question I am often asked.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1768734622944{margin-top: 20px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”6298″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””]

Visuals can help all children, whether they are autistic, have ADHD, or have other special educational needs. This is because visuals make it easier for children to process what is happening or what is being asked of them alongside the spoken word.

Spoken words disappear quickly, and digital devices can go blank before our children have had time to fully process the information. Visuals, however, remain visible for as long as they are needed, allowing children to take their time to understand and respond in their own way.

Visuals are also universal and can be understood by most people. This means our children can communicate effectively even if they are non-verbal. They also help to reinforce learning, as many children—especially those with additional needs—are visual learners. In fact, we all use visuals every day without realising it, such as recognising shop signs, choosing the right product in a supermarket, or following symbols and pictures in daily life.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””]

By putting visual supports in place, we help our children develop independence, confidence, and essential life skills. As a mum who uses visuals with my own daughter, I have seen first-hand how powerful they can be. For example, if something appeared on her timetable that she didn’t like, instead of directing her frustration towards me, we could “blame the timetable,” which often helped to prevent a meltdown.

I hope this helps explain why visuals are so important and how they can support our children.
